Steelers continue to make waves in the 2025 offseason, and their latest roster update confirms a key detail: newly acquired tight end Jonnu Smith will wear jersey No. 81. The reveal came just one day after cornerback Jalen Ramsey’s jersey number was confirmed, signaling the team’s fresh look following the major trade with the Miami Dolphins.
Steelers reveal Jersey numbers for Jonnu Smith and Jalen Ramsey
The Steelers' recent trade with the Miami Dolphins sent shockwaves through the NFL. Pittsburgh received star tight end Jonnu Smith and elite cornerback Jalen Ramsey, while longtime Steelers safety Minkah Fitzpatrick was sent to Miami in the deal. Now, with training camp approaching, jersey numbers are being finalized and fans are paying close attention.
Jalen Ramsey, who previously wore No. 20 and later switched to No. 5 with the Los Angeles Rams, will continue to wear No. 5 in Pittsburgh. That number was previously held by punter Cameron Johnston, who now shifts to a new number or role. Ramsey’s choice adds flair to the Steelers’ secondary, which now features one of the most respected lockdown corners in the league.
On Friday, the Steelers announced that Jonnu Smith will don No. 81. The number was most recently worn by MyCole Pruitt, Smith’s former teammate with both the Atlanta Falcons and Tennessee Titans.
Smith wore No. 81 during his stints with the Falcons, Titans, and New England Patriots, but briefly switched to No. 9 during his 2023 season in Miami.
The number assignment reinforces Smith’s familiarity and comfort as he enters his new chapter in Pittsburgh. Known for his athleticism and red zone reliability, Smith is expected to bring versatility to the Steelers’ offense, especially with offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, who coached him previously in Tennessee.
As for Ramsey, his continued use of the No. 5 jersey adds swagger to a Steelers defense that’s looking to reclaim its dominance. He joins linebacker Patrick Queen (No. 6) as one of only two defensive players on the roster with a single-digit number.
