"There has been no surgical strike by India, instead there had been cross border fire initiated and conducted by India which is existential phenomenon," Pakistan army said in a statement.

Army's move to carry out surgical strikes against terror launch pads at the LoC have been welcomed by politicians across party lines.

The Pakistan Air Force too denied the nature of the strike. "This was not a surgical strike (by Indian Army). We are alert for any eventuality," it said.

Pakistan on Thursday dismissed as "fabrication of truth" India's claim that it has conducted a military operation across the LoC to target terrorist launching pads, terming it as a "quest" by India to create media hype by rebranding cross-border fire as surgical strike.

The Sensex plunged 572.89 points, or 2.02%, to 27,719.92, with all sectoral indices led by realty, healthcare, power and metal slumping by up to 5.05%.

The option of surgical strikes was taken in the wake of increase in infiltration bids, the DGMO informed.

"We condemn this attack. Our desire for peace should not be interpreted as our weakness," Sharif said in a statement.
