Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has strongly criticized the BJP-led government's plan to observe June 25 as 'samvidhaan hatya diwas,' calling it hypocritical. Banerjee argued that the BJP itself undermines the Constitution, citing the toppling of democratically elected governments.

Union home minister Amit Shah on Friday said June 25, the day on which ex-PM Indira Gandhi imposed an Emergency in 1975, will be observed as 'samvidhaan hatya diwas'. "On June 25, 1975, the then PM Indira Gandhi, in a brazen display of a dictatorial mindset, strangled the soul of our democracy by imposing the Emergency on the nation. Lakhs of people were thrown behind bars for no fault of their own, and the voice of the media was silenced," home minister Amit Shah announced on X sharing government notification.

The Union government announced that June 25 will henceforth be observed as 'samvidhaan hatya diwas', marking the day in 1975 when former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi imposed a nationwide Emergency. Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that observing June 25 as 'samvidhaan hatya diwas' will serve as a "reminder of what happens when the Constitution of India was trampled over." Home minister Amit Shah shared the government's decision on Friday.

In his letter to the board on Wednesday, the party's Delhi president Paramjit Singh Sarna said the trailer of the film, which was released recently, "depicts erroneous historical facts that not only misrepresent the Sikh community but also promotes hatred and social discord". Such depictions are not only misleading but also deeply offensive and damaging to the social fabric of Punjab and the entire nation, he said.

The Congress party claims the government is planning a special Parliament session. This session would mark the 50th anniversary of the Emergency. Jairam Ramesh criticizes this as a diversion from urgent issues. He mentions unanswered questions regarding terror attacks and ceasefire negotiations. The party also accuses Prime Minister Narendra Modi of an undeclared Emergency.

Sunil Ambekar, a senior RSS functionary, stated that thousands of RSS volunteers were jailed and tortured during the Emergency imposed by Indira Gandhi in 1975, resulting in approximately 100 deaths. He described the Emergency as a "black spot" on India's democracy, highlighting the arrests, beatings, and torture inflicted upon RSS workers.
