At 11. 30pm on Wednesday, Adugodi police inspector S Manjunath was examining vehicles passing by a temporary checkpoint put up using barricades on 100 Feet Road, Koramangala. Occupants of the vehicles slowing down at the barricades were being questioned, if needed. But a Honda City car managed to speed on, brushing against the barricades even as a youngster in the rear seat kept screaming “kapadi” (save me) in Kannada. Manjunath immediately hopped on to his jeep and gave the car a chase for a little more than half a kilometre. As the police jeep appeared unrelenting, the car stopped in the middle of the road and three youths jumped out of it and took to their heels. The cop, however, managed to detain the car driver and rescue the youth in the back seat. The youth, Mohammed Tauhid, 21, a resident of KS Layout and driver with a mini-goods truck, told police he had been abducted on Monday night. The reason: He had not paid Rs 40,000 to one of his captors, from whom he had purchased a sports motorbike for Rs 45,000 in 2021. Tauhid had made an advance payment of Rs 5,000 but withheld the remaining amount as the bike owner had not handed him the vehicle’s original documents. The arrested car driver was identified as Gopi, a resident of Mangammanapalya in Bandepalya. A manhunt has been launched for the remaining three suspects who are from the same area. Police said on Monday night that the accused called Tauhid to Mangammanapalya, saying they would hand over the original documents. The unsuspecting Tauhid arrived there and was kidnapped.
