Iran's assault on Gulf shipping has entered its fifth day with no sign of letting up bringing the total number of vessels targeted to nine since the conflict began on Saturday. An explosive-laden remote-controlled boat rammed a Bahamas-registered crude tanker near Iraq's Khor al-Zubair port, while a second tanker anchored off Kuwait suffered a massive explosion, taking on water and leaking oil. Around 200 vessels are now stranded in open Gulf waters, and hundreds more sit waiting outside the Strait of Hormuz. Oil prices have surged 14 percent since the conflict began. The targeting of Gulf shipping was reportedly part of a plan devised by the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
