NFSU, Zydus Hospital tie up for toxicology research
Ahmedabad: The National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU) on Wednesday joined hands with Zydus Hospital to carry out research in advanced clinical toxicology. NFSU officials said the MoU will function under the Centre for Emergency Toxicology (CET) of NFSU. Prof S O Junare from NFSU and Dr Chaitasy Mehta from Zydus Hospital signed the MoU."The CET is dedicated to assisting medical professionals by enabling quick detection of poison and thereby managing emergencies and providing better healthcare," said an NFSU official.Dr Jayesh Trivedi from Zydus Hospital said that while sample collection will take place at the hospital, the analysis will be done at the university under the forensic toxicology branch. "The poisons could be organophosphates, drugs, heavy metals, etc. It could also be used for alcohol estimation and drug abuse screening from urine, blood and hair," he said.The discipline is likely to address cases where patients come with suspected poisoning or those with a medico-legal angle.The city police have handled several poisoning cases annually, some of which resulted in suicide attempts and deaths. The cops depended on forensic toxicology analysis in a recent case involving the deaths of two girls in Chandkheda, as blood samples were collected from the parents.
