Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: A 30-year-old man allegedly murdered his wife and eight-year-old daughter with an axe following a domestic dispute in Beradwadi village in Dharashiv district. The police registered an FIR and arrested the accused after he surrendered and confessed to the crime.
The accused, identified as Ajit Vasudev, allegedly attacked his wife, Limbabai (24), and daughter, Mansi, late on Monday night within the jurisdiction of the Murum police station. Both victims died on the spot due to multiple axe blows, the police said.
Assistant inspector Sandip Dahiphale said, "The preliminary probe has revealed that Vasudev suspected his wife's character and frequently assaulted her. However, the exact trigger behind the act is still being ascertained. The police are investigating the case from multiple angles, including prolonged domestic discord and suspicion."
According to the police, a heated argument broke out between Ajit and Limbabai on Monday, which escalated into violence. In a fit of rage, Vasudev allegedly picked up an axe from the house and repeatedly attacked both his wife and daughter.
At the time of the incident, the couple's four-year-old son was present inside the house. Terrified by the violence and the sight of blood, the child ran out of the house, escaping harm. The accused had two daughters and a son; the elder daughter was staying at her maternal grandparents' home and thus survived.
The accused walked into the police station around 2am on Tuesday and confessed to the murders. Acting on his statement, the police visited the spot and carried out a panchnama, later sending the bodies to a govt hospital in Murum for postmortem.
Superintendent of police Ritu Khokher Kalyan and sub-divisional officer Sadashiv Shelar visited the scene and reviewed the investigation.
