Ranya Rao Bail Hearing Live Updates: Kannada actress bail plea to be heard today

A special court dealing with economic offences on Wednesday dismissed the bail application of Tollywood actor Tarun Konduru Raju, who was arrested alongside Sandalwood actor Ranya Rao for allegedly transporting 14.2kg of gold bars from Dubai.

Special judge Vishwanath C Gowdar denied bail to Raju, who has been in judicial custody at Bengaluru Central Prison since his arrest on March 8.

The bail hearing for the primary accused, Ranya, has been rescheduled to Friday by a sessions court. Previously, the special court had rejected her bail application, citing concerns about the 'impact on national economy'. Following this decision, Ranya's legal representative approached the sessions court for bail consideration.

During Wednesday's proceedings, public prosecutor Madhu Rao requested additional time to submit objections. Subsequently, the court adjourned the matter until March 21.

With the gold smuggling racket involving Sandalwood actor Ranya Rao becoming increasingly intricate whilst three central investigation agencies delve deeper, the state government mandated senior IPS officer and director general of police (Karnataka Police Housing Corporation) K Ramachandra Rao to proceed on 'compulsory leave'.

The scrutiny intensified on Ramachandra after his daughter Ranya was apprehended at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) on March 3 whilst attempting to smuggle 14.2 kg of gold from Dubai.

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) had opposed his bail, arguing that he might attempt to flee the country if released. The agency also pointed out that Raju had allegedly tried to leave the country after Ranya Rao’s arrest, leading to a lookout circular being issued against him.

Accused number 2 Tarun Konduru Raju was identified by DRI as Ranya's business associate in Vira Diamonds, with direct involvement in gold smuggling operations. Being a US passport holder, he allegedly collected gold in Dubai, obtained customs clearance by declaring Geneva as the destination, and delivered it to Ranya before flying back to Hyderabad within the same day.

Kannada actress Ranya Rao was arrested at Kempegowda International Airport for allegedly smuggling gold on March 3. A sessions court hearing the bail petition of prime suspect Ranya shall be convened today. She was subsequently presented before a special court for financial offences on March 4 and remanded to judicial custody until March 18.
