Kurukshetra/Ambala: In a breakthrough against organised crime and suspected extortion networks, the Haryana police Special Task Force (STF) Ambala unit and Counter Intelligence wing of Punjab Police jointly arrested a notorious gangster, and recovered a hand grenade during a follow-up operation in Haryana's Kurukshetra district on Wednesday.
The arrested accused has been identified as Surya Pratap alias Noni Rana, a resident of Tangore village in Kurukshetra district. He was apprehended on May 11 during a special operation conducted by STF Ambala.
Police officials said that one illegal pistol, a magazine and two live cartridges were recovered from the possession of the accused at the time of his arrest.
During preliminary interrogation, the accused allegedly disclosed that he was working in coordination with his associates operating from abroad. Investigators suspect that the gang was involved in extorting money from businessmen and orchestrating firing incidents targeting those who refused to pay extortion demands.
Acting on the disclosure statement of the accused during further investigation, the police teams recovered a hand grenade from Ladwa Road near Shahabad Sugar Mill. Following the recovery, the bomb disposal squad was rushed to the spot and the grenade was safely defused and disposed of.
Ambala STF DSP Aman said the recovery of the grenade indicates the possible involvement of organised criminal elements with access to dangerous weapons and explosives, prompting agencies to widen the scope of investigation.
The entire operation was jointly executed by the STF Ambala unit and Counter Intelligence Punjab Police. Officials said further investigation is underway to identify and apprehend other associates linked to the network, including those operating from abroad.
