Cyclone Burevi live updates: IMD issues heavy rain alert for four Kerala districts today

With the low-pressure area over Gulf of Mannar remaining stationary, the associated cyclonic circulation will continue to influence rainfall at isolated places over Kerala. As per reports, the cyclone is expected to hit the Thiruvananthapuram coast by Friday noon. Heavy rains have been predicted in Thiruvananthauram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki and Ernakulam. Reports are that heavy rains will continue from December 3 to 5 in these districts, said the chief minister. There is also prediction of heavy wind in these areas.

Kerala chief minister said the help of Air Force and Navy have been assured for the state and already eight teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have reached the state.

The cyclonic storm Burevi over Sri Lanka moved west-northwestwards with a speed of 12kmph during past six hours and lay centred about 60km northwest of Trincomalee, 180km east-southeast of Pamban (India). Likely to emerge into Gulf of Mannar in the morning of December 3.

In its evening bulletin, the IMD said the cyclonic storm was likely to move west-northwestwards and emerge in the Gulf of Mannar and adjoining Comorin area on December 3 morning. The storm with wind speed of 70-80kmph gusting to 90kmph would be centred very close to Pamban around noon of December 3.

Kerala is on high alert with cyclone Burevi expected to make landfall by Friday as authorities geared up to tackle the situation by opening over 2000 relief camps and taking other steps including banning fishing along the coast till December 5. (PTI)

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday telephoned Tamil Nadu chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami and inquired him about the situation arising out of cyclone Burevi. The chief minister apprised the PM of the precautionary measures taken by the state government.
