PUDUCHERRY: A woman escaped after abandoning her newborn girl in a bush near a private medical college and hospital in the suburbs of
Puducherry town on Tuesday.
Police said Vaitheeswari, who was expecting a baby, was admitted to a private college and hospital a couple of days ago.
She gave birth to a girl on Monday. The baby had congenital cardiac problems and had been struggling to breathe normally.
The doctors at the hospital referred the child to the Indira Gandhi government general hospital and research institute for advanced treatment.
The woman, a mother of two girl children, abandoned the child in a bush near the hospital and escaped. Passersby, on noticing the child, alerted the Thirubuvanai police.
A police team took the girl and admitted her to the private college and hospital. Initial inquiries revealed that the woman decided to desert the girl as she was afraid her husband and in-laws would object to raising another girl child in the family.
Inquiries also revealed that the woman had given a false address in Villupuram district. Police, however, managed to trace her relatives in Chennai based on her interactions with fellow patients in the past two days.
ChildLine volunteers visited the girl at the hospital after police alerted the organization. The child’s condition improved after the treatment. Police have registered a case and launched efforts to trace the woman.
