Chennai: Yet another undertrial managed to escape from police custody—third such incident in a week. The 34-year-old was, however, rearrested in Bengaluru on Thursday.
Police said Mohanraj was undergoing medical treatment at the Govt Stanley Medical College Hospital when he escaped. He was arrested in a ganja-related case and was lodged in the Villupuram prison. During his detention, he complained of severe chest pain and was taken to the hospital for treatment, which is when he managed to slip away.
The Washermenpet police registered a case. A team, however, caught him at a hideout in Bengaluru and brought him back to Chennai on Thursday. He was then produced before a magistrate and remanded in Puzhal Central Prison.
In another incident at KK Nagar, R Divakar, 21, who was brought in for questioning about the sale of narcotic pills, escaped from custody on Tuesday. Search is still on. Police said he was picked up by the police team from his residence at 11.15am on Tuesday. He was being questioned at the station when he escaped at 12.40pm.
On June 2, a burglary suspect, Vishal alias Bablu, 19, a resident of Ezhil Nagar in Thoraipakkam, escaped from the custody of Neelankarai police. He was nabbed after a brief chase.
