Dehradun: The Army marked Vijay Diwas at Shaurya Sthal on Tuesday, paying homage to soldiers who laid down their lives during the 1971 India-Pakistan war.
The tribute was led by Uttarakhand governor Lt Gen Gurmit Singh (retd), along with Uttarakhand sub-area GOC Maj Gen MPS Gill and joint chief hydrographer Rear Admiral Peush Pawsey. Senior Army officers, veterans and personnel posted in Dehradun were also present.
Defence PRO (Dehradun) Lt Col Manish Srivastava said that during the event, Lt Gen Singh interacted with serving and retired personnel and praised their contribution to the defence of the country.
Referring to the 1971 war, the governor described the victory as a landmark chapter in India's military history. He said the
Indian armed forces, through bravery, courage and strategic planning, compelled the surrender of 93,000 Pakistani troops and led to the creation of Bangladesh as an independent nation, marking a defining moment for the region.
The governor added that Vijay Diwas was not merely a remembrance of past victories, but also a moment for reflection and renewed resolve. He stressed the need for continued preparedness and vigilance to effectively address future challenges, including both internal and external security concerns, Lt Col Srivastava said.
