NAINITAL: The Uttarakhand high court on Monday directed the state government to hold elections for Roorkee Municipal Corporation (RMC) on or before December 31 this year.
The matter was heard by the division bench of acting Chief Justice Rajiv Sharma and Justice Manoj Kumar Tiwari.
Sanjay Bhatt, counsel for the state election commission, told TOI, “The court directed the state government to hold elections while hearing a petition filed by Yashpal Rana, former mayor of the RMC on October 16.”
Rana had said in his petition that the state government had gone ahead with the election process by issuing a notification for polls in all urban local bodies except Roorkee despite HC directions.
On October 10, the high court had directed the state government to complete reservation process in RMC on or before October 15, 2018.
On October 16, single bench of Justice Manoj Kumar Tiwari had asked the state government to respond by October 22 on why the reservation process for Roorkee Municipal Corporation was not done and why it was left out of the local body election process.
