NEW DELHI: Two persons, including an eight-month-old girl, died after being hit by a Whiteline bus near Akshardham temple in east Delhi on Thursday afternoon. The mother of the child was also was injured.The accident took place when the bus hit a motorbike carrying three people around 12:45 pm. The driver of the bus managed to flee initially but was apprehended later.According to police, the whiteline bus (DL1P/7682) hit the motorcycle while attempting to overtake it as they both headed towards the Nizamuddin flyover.
"Both the vehicles were coming from Mayur Vihar. The bus hit the motorbike from behind, causing it to fall, injuring all three riders. The driver of the bike, identified as 28-year-old Gaurav Saxena, died on the spot, while his 8-month-old daughter, Mannat, succumbed to injuries later. His wife, 23-year-old Sonu Saxena, is still hospitalised," police said.
Saxena used to work as a sales executive in a suit lengths showroom at Shipra Mall. He lived with his wife and daughter in Ghaziabad. Saxena’s father lives in Faridabad.The bus driver fled after causing the accident. Some eyewitnesses attempted to chase him but he sped away. Santosh Gupta, who works as an purchasing assistant in a showroom in Noida said, "I was standing under the Mayur Vihar flyover when the accident took place. The biker was completely in control and was hit by the front bumper of the bus as it attempted to overtake the bike. The bike skidded and fell down. The man on the bike fell towards the bus while the lady fell on the other side. The child on the bike fell some distance away. I attempted to chase the bus but prioritised helping the child, who was still showing some movement. Vehicles on that stretch of the road in any case are notorious for speeding."Gupta added, "Along with another bystander, I tried to save the woman and the child. We stopped several cars before the driver of a red Zen agreed to take the child to Escorts hospital nearby. Later, we learnt he’d taken her to RML hospital, where she succumbed to injuries later. Sonu Saxena is still admitted in Holy Family Hospital, New Friends Colony. "DCP (east) Ajay Chaudhry, said,"Gaurav Saxena was taken to Lal Bahadur Hospital in in east Delhi, where he was declared brought dead. The driver, identified as Rajinder Verma, fled the spot but was arrested later."
