Aizawl: Mizoram Police over the last two days seized large quantities of methamphetamine, heroin and opium in a series of operations in eastern Mizoram’s Champhai and Saitual districts, arresting several suspects including Myanmar nationals.The biggest seizure was made in Champhai district early Sunday when police, assisted by Sub-Headquarters YMA Champhai leaders, conducted vehicle checks near Khankawn Check Gate on the outskirts of Chhungte village.Police said two scooters arriving at the checkpoint raised suspicion and were stopped, but no contraband was found on the vehicles. Officers then noticed two men approaching with rucksacks; both allegedly tried to flee after seeing the police team.One suspect escaped after abandoning his bag, while another—identified as Stephen Mangbawithang (20) of Myanmar's Topila village—was caught after a brief chase.A search of the two rucksacks led to the recovery of methamphetamine tablets weighing about 23.855 kg. Police said the consignment contained an estimated 2,12,100 tablets valued at around Rs 1.69 crore in the illegal market.Police seized the narcotics and the two scooters. Three Myanmar nationals—Rinneihmang (26), Thangluimang (21) and Stephen Mangbawithang—were arrested and booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985 and the Immigration and Foreigners Act.In a separate operation on Friday night, a special team from Saitual District Police intercepted an Assam-registered Ashok Leyland truck on the Aizawl-Saitual road near Kualmawi in Keifang town.During a search, police recovered heroin weighing 427 grams, valued at about Rs 85.4 lakh, and six packets of suspected opium fluid weighing 3.288 kg, valued at about Rs 16.44 lakh. Police said the contraband was hidden in a compartment behind the driver’s cabin lining and in a toolbox attached to the side of the vehicle.Two men from Assam—Gautam Borah (32) and Manab Jyoti Dutta (31)—were arrested.Another seizure was reported from Vaphai in Champhai district on Friday after police received information from local volunteers about a suspicious Bolero Camper. A team from Dungtlang village searched the vehicle and recovered heroin weighing 618 grams and four bundles of suspected methamphetamine weighing 4.74 kg, police said. The drugs were allegedly concealed under sacks of dried chillies in the rear of the vehicle.The occupants were identified as Chungnawl (41) of Singai, Myanmar, and Hmingsangliana (38) of Vaphai, Mizoram. Police said a case has been registered and investigation is underway.In another case, Champhai Police recovered heroin from a woman passenger after stopping a taxi at the Assam Rifles check post near Zote village on June 5. Police said no drugs were found in the vehicle, but they became suspicious of a passenger, Dimsianzovi (32) of Jail Veng, Champhai. She was produced before a Gazetted Officer for a personal search, during which heroin weighing 66 grams was recovered from concealment inside her clothing. A case was registered under the NDPS Act.Police said investigations are continuing in all cases to identify other members of the trafficking networks and trace the intended destinations of the seized contraband.
