Overloaded mining trucks spark protest in Bijgarni village
Belagavi: Tension gripped Bijgarni village in Belagavi taluk after residents staged a late-night protest against the frequent movement of overloaded mining trucks through narrow internal roads, raising serious concerns over safety, pollution, and infrastructure damage.According to villagers, heavy trucks carrying 40-50 tonnes of laterite and other mining material passed through the village regularly, despite the roads being ill-equipped to handle such loads. Residents alleged that many of these vehicles were not only overloaded but also driven at high speeds, posing a constant threat to pedestrians, particularly children and the elderly. The situation escalated on Monday night around 11.30pm when agitated villagers blocked several trucks and demanded explanations from the drivers. However, the drivers reportedly failed to provide satisfactory answers, further fuelling public anger. Villagers also claimed that there was no visible presence of officials from the transport or mining departments to regulate or monitor the movement of these vehicles.Locals said the continuous movement of heavy trucks has led to severe pollution, with thick dust clouds engulfing the village and affecting daily life.
Residents expressed concern over potential health risks, including respiratory problems, especially among vulnerable groups. The excessive load and constant traffic also caused significant damage to village roads, leading to cracks and making them unsafe for regular use.Safety concerns intensified, with villagers warning that reckless driving and overspeeding could result in a serious accident at any time. "If an accident occurs, who will take responsibility?" questioned residents, demanding accountability from the authorities. In response, villagers submitted a set of demands to the district administration, including an immediate ban on the movement of overloaded trucks through village roads, strict enforcement of speed limits, and regular water sprinkling to control dust pollution. They also sought urgent intervention to ensure the safety of residents.Villagers reportedly recorded video evidence showing overloaded trucks passing through the area and their confrontation with drivers. The incident once again highlighted the issue of illegal overloading and unregulated mining transportation in rural parts of Belagavi, with residents urging authorities to take swift action before the situation led to a major mishap.
