Infant hugs mother on flame, dies

HYDERABAD: An infant died on Saturday due to burns he suffered when he hugged his mother who set herself ablaze to end her life at Chandanagar. The woman died instantly while the boy succumbed to burns at hospital.
Police said the woman, S Padma, 25, doused herself in kerosene and set herself ablaze on Friday. The one-year-old infant, Shravan seemed to have crawled up to her mother and hugged her, suffering severe burns, according to Chandanagar police inspector M Madhusudhan Reddy.Her elder son Shiva was also in the house when her mother took the extreme step. Padma’s husband Subhash Rao runs a 'chat bhandar'.
Police suspect that family disputes might have driven the woman to suicide. But her parents reportedly told the police that she was mentally unsound.
