Jamshedpur: The Tata Steel Utility and Infrastructure Services Ltd (TS UISL) achieved 100% drinking water production capacity, and by July 2026, the company is expected to surpass 1 lakh water connections in the city. The company augmented its capacity to meet the potential increase in demand.
TS UISL managing director, Ritu Raj Sinha, said that the company achieved almost 100% drinking water production capacity for its service areas in the 64 sq km radius. “Presently, tap water is supplied to 95,000 connections daily, which includes 15,000 connections of the Tata Steel employees' residential quarters, besides 80,000 private connections," he said.
In the next six months, 5,400 new connections will be given in the eastern part of the city, and 12,500 new connections are the potential connections in the western, southern, and northern parts of the city, thus taking the total connections to 1.10 lakh. Namda Basti, Nandnagar, Mahanand Basti, 10 No Basti, Refugee Colony, Jojobera, Ramnagar, Ramjanamnagar, Kapali Basti, Cable Town, among others, are the residential areas identified for the new connections.
The 24 million litres daily (MLD) capacity water treatment plant commissioned at Moharda, 3 million gallon litres daily (MGD) capacity water treatment plant at Ramdin Bagan at ISWP Transportation Park and the 5 million litre daily (MLD) capacity water treatment plant at Bhuyadih have also been commissioned by the company as part of the sustained exercise to augment the capacity to meet the growing demand.
The treatment plants, built with Pressure Sand Filter (PSF) and Activated Carbon Filter (ACF) technology, ensure safe and clean drinking tap water for its customers. The electro-chlorination facility at the treatment plants helps in disinfection, which reduces the usage of liquid chlorine. The wastewater generated in filter beds is recycled back to the inlet zone. The plants are also equipped with laboratory facilities for physico-chemical and microbiological analysis, officials explained.
Further, the company commissioned an automated water supply system at Central Water Tower in Bistupur to enhance its operational efficiency and distribution network. The enhanced system will ensure uninterrupted and timely water to the consumers.
It is notable that TS UISL supplies 280 million litres of water daily (MLD) to its customers through an 886 km distribution network. With a national average of 135 litres per capita per day (LPCD), the Steel City averages 200 LPCD, which shows the high level of tap water consumption in the city.
