Kottayam: The family of a remand prisoner who was found hanging in Alappuzha district jail suspects foul play in the incident.
Sajith Prasad, the brother of the deceased Sharath Prasad (41), and Sharath's wife Sijin on Tuesday said that they would file a complaint with the district police chief, demanding a detailed investigation into what happened in the district jail.
Sharath, from Palliveliveettil, Punnapra North panchayat, was found hanging in a cell in the district jail on Sunday. The police claim that he climbed onto a tap and tied a noose on the ventilator. However, given his leg injury from an accident, it seems unlikely that he could have climbed to such a height, relatives said.
Although the police claim Sharath died by suicide, the family refutes the claim. The police mentioned the existence of CCTV footage but have not been willing to show the video. Concerns related to the death have been presented before the magistrate. The accusation that he insulted a doctor when he arrived at the general hospital after the accident is false, his family said.
While there was an argument with an attendant in the emergency department during an outburst, he did not insult the doctor, they clarified.
