Kolkata Rain Live Updates: 8 dead; 30 flights cancelled, 42 delayed; CM Mamata Banerjee condoles deaths

Kolkata was hit by torrential rain overnight, causing severe waterlogging across the city and disrupting daily life. Metro services between Shahid Khudiram and Maidan stations were suspended for passenger safety, while truncated services operated between Dakshineswar and Maidan. Metro staff and officers are on-site, pumping out water and working to restore normal operations.

Railway lines, including Howrah and Sealdah divisions, saw significant waterlogging in station yards, Chitpur North Cabin, and various car sheds. Some suburban trains were short-terminated or short-originated to manage the emergency, and services on circular railway lines and Sealdah South section were suspended. Train cancellations included 13113 Up Hazarduari Express from Kolkata and 13177 Sealdah Jangipur Express.

Road traffic was also severely affected. Tree branches fell on Wood Street and Cathedral Road, causing blockages. Parts of AJC Bose Road and DH Road were shut, and private buses operated at just 20% of capacity. Electrocution deaths were reported in Beniapukur and Khidderpore, prompting CESC to disconnect power in waterlogged zones.

Several schools declared holidays, and many south and north Kolkata neighbourhoods, including Garia, Ballygunge, Jodhpur Park, Kalighat, Amherst Street, Sukea Street, Thanthania, College Street, Bowbazar, and MG Road, were submerged under water. Garia recorded 332 mm of rain in just four hours, while Ballygunge, Jodhpur Park, and Kalighat received over 250 mm.

Authorities are working round the clock to clear water from roads, railway tracks, and metro stations. The situation remains challenging due to water flowing back from adjacent civil areas into railway yards. Citizens are advised to exercise caution, avoid waterlogged streets, and stay updated with official announcements.
