Prime minister Narendra Modi will visit Odisha and West Bengal on Friday to review the impact of cyclone Yaas on the two coastal states. Cyclone Yaas pounded parts of India's eastern coast on Wednesday, killing at least four people and forcing more than 21 lakh people to be evacuated to safe shelters in West Bengal, Odisha and Jharkhand. As the Odisha administration battled Cyclone 'Yaas', which ripped through the state causing widespread destruction, more than 300 births were registered in the coastal state, with some families rushing to name their newborns after the menacing storm, officials said. (PTI)

Evacuees return to houses as cyclone moves towards Jharkhand
With cyclone Yaas weakening into a depression and moving towards Jharkhand, the evacuees sheltered in different cyclone-resilient shelters have started returning home with outdoor exposure and fear of contracting Covid-19 remaining uppermost in their minds. (PTI)

Government sources said Modi will first hold a review meeting in Bhubaneswar and then proceed for an aerial survey in the affected areas of Balasore, Bhadrak and Purba Medinipur. He will then hold a review meeting in West Bengal. (PTI)

It was discussed that about 106 teams of NDRF were deployed with 46 teams each in West Bengal/ Odisha that rescued more than 1000 persons and removed more than 2500 trees/poles that had fallen & obstructed the roads. The Defence Forces namely Army and Coast Guard also rescued marooned persons, while Navy & Air Force were on the alert.

The ‘very severe cyclonic storm’ Yaas, that made a landfall in the coastal region of north Odisha on Wednesday morning, weakened gradually into a severe cyclonic storm and cyclonic storm as it advanced north-northwestwards towards Jharkhand.

Cyclone Yaas thundered into the Odisha coast — around 290km from Kolkata — with a wind speed of 130-140km/hr, gusting up to 155km/hr, wreaking havoc in and around the Dhamra-Balasore coastline for two-and-a-half hours, from 9.30am to noon. Kolkata, which had braced for a repeat of Amphan, escaped with just light to moderate showers that were sporadic through the day.
