BURDWAN: The West Bengal police has embarked upon an ambitious plan — to set up a women desk in each of its 411 police stations. State director-general of police Shyamal Dutta pointed this out on Sunday.
Speaking at a function to hand over keys to 32 constables of the newly-made police quarters at Burdwan police line, Dutta said women personnel were posted at 200 police stations already, which would soon be extended to other police stations.
Dutta cautioned his men against the rising incidents of crime against women. “They can approach the women’s desks without fear and narrate their problems to women officers.
They find it difficult to do the same before male officers, the DG said.He also pointed out that a female officer of sub-inspector rank aided by two women constables would man these desks. He said that in a bid to upgrade the force, an additional 40 inspectors would be posted as officers-in-charge of police stations.
They would be aided by an additional inspector-in-charge. Presently, many police stations in the state have to do with sub-inspector rank officers as police station OCs. The DG also said a proposal for creating 11 more police stations has been sent to the Home (police) department for approval. Dutta praised the Burdwan SP Neeraj Singh for taking up the police quarter project and completing it. The then home (police) minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee had inaugurated the project four years ago. The DG said 1,660 police quarters had to be built under the 10th Finance Commission, 208 of them in Burdwan alone. Women units at police stations a must
