LUCKNOW: At least 12 people lost their lives in
Uttar Pradesh after severe storms and strong winds battered several districts on Thursday night, according to the UP Relief Commissioner department.
The fatalities were reported from Pratapgarh, Kaushambi, Shahjahanpur, Fatehpur and Hamirpur, where a bridge collapse during the storm claimed six lives.
Officials said one death each was reported from Pratapgarh, Shahjahanpur and Fatehpur, while three people died in Kaushambi. Hamirpur recorded the highest toll, with six people killed after a bridge gave way amid the extreme weather conditions.
The state administration has launched an assessment of the damage caused by the storm across affected districts. Emergency response teams were deployed to carry out rescue and relief operations, while local authorities were monitoring the situation and extending assistance to affected families.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) recorded exceptionally high wind speeds in several parts of the state during the night.
Hamirpur's Sumerpur Polytechnic College reported the highest wind speed at 122 kmph. Jalaun's Orai tehsil recorded gusts of 118 kmph, while Banda registered wind speeds of 111 kmph at the Circuit House and 100 kmph in Pailani. Mirzapur also recorded winds touching 100 kmph.
In western Uttar Pradesh, wind speeds reached 109 kmph in Hathras' Jahangirpur village and 100 kmph in Etmadpur, Agra.
