MEERUT: Referring to Meerut SSP Manzil Saini’s claim that the teen girl who burnt herself to death after being harassed by stalkers for months may have been in a relationship with the main accused, BJP MP Rajendra Agarwal said the local police had failed to protect the girl and they were now trying to sully her image.
“The SSP claims that this is a case of a love affair gone horribly wrong. If SSP Saini has said such a thing, I am really worried and enraged by her statement. This attempt to cover up the shoddy work of local police is in bad taste,” Agarwal said during a press conference on Friday.
Earlier in the day, Saini had hinted at the possibility of a relationship between the dead girl and the main accused. “Going by the messages exchanged (between the two), it is certain that the main accused and the deceased were on talking terms.”
In a hurriedly called press meet, the local BJP MP said, “The incident occurred on January 6. I was informed about the incident on Thursday with people claiming that police have failed to act. I called up the station officer who claimed that he didn't act because he didn't receive a complaint. This is sheer lack of sensitivity on the part of the local police.”
The girl had set herself on fire on January 6, the day chief minister
Yogi Adityanath, during a public programme, raised concerns regarding women's safety in UP and asked police to deal with such offenders in the same way that they do with gangsters.
“CM Yogi Adityanath wanted to assure people of better law and order, especially on the issue of women's safety, but the insensitivity of the local police has failed Yogiji,” the MP said.
