Kamothe lake in Navi Mumbai loses major part to reclamation project
Navi Mumbai: A nature enthusiast said that a major part of a lake in Kamothe, Sector 20, was lost to reclamation and a playground thereafter. Between April 2018 and Feb 2025, the lake lost about 7 acres. The lake is located near Jawahar Industrial Estate and houses many aquatic animals and plants. Activists complain most of them were killed due to dumping-related activities. The playground has been developed on a major part of the reclaimed area. Sharing the images of the historical imagery, nature activist Uddhav Garje claimed, “This was a large water body of around 8+ acres (around 3.5 hectares). Only a small portion of the water body is left, and that also is threatened with waste-dumping. Slowly, the water bodies are being reclaimed in the node.” Another activist, Alpesh Mane, said, “The locals protested against Cidco for conducting developmental projects on the ground. Since the protest a few years ago, the civic body has not disturbed the lake for their activities.”
