Mumbai: Maximum City witnesses 2877 new cases, eight deaths

Maharashtra on Wednesday reported this year's highest-ever spike in COVID-19 cases amid rising concerns. The state reported as many as 23,179 new cases of coronavirus in a single day. There are 1,52,760 active cases in the state at present. Mumbai city reported 2,377 new cases, taking the COVID-19 tally to 3,49,974, while eight deaths took the fatality count to 11,551. Meanwhile, in another development, IPS officer Hemant Nagrale took charge as Mumbai police chief after his predecessor Param Bir Singh was transferred to the state Home Guard as announced by the state government in the afternoon. Singh was under flak over the handling of the bomb scare outside industrialist Mukesh Ambani's residence and Mansukh Hiren case.

COVID-19 Highlights March 18

Surpassing the previous single-day spike of 24,886 registered on September 11, 2020, Maharashtra has witnessed a new high of new coronavirus positive cases on Thursday. The health officials stated that 25,833 people tested positive in the last 24 hours. The total caseload is now 23,96,340. Meanwhile, 58 people succumbed to the virus in the last 24 hours. The total death toll stands at 53,138. On the other hand, 12,764 patients have been discharged post-recovery in the last 24 hours, the health department further added. The total number of people who got cured and discharged from the state stands at 21,75,565. There are presently 1,66,353 active cases in Maharashtra.

Crucial audio tapes in possession of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and interrogation of several police officers have revealed that disgraced "encounter specialist" Sachin Vaze had bypassed police hierarchy while handling the SUV case.To oblige his political bosses, Vaze reported the developments directly to his "masters" and deliberately kept many senior officers out of the loop, highly-placed sources said.Explaining the motive behind planting an explosive-laden SUV near top industrialist Mukesh Ambani's multi-storey residence in Mumbai, BJP leader and legislator Ram Kadam, who initially raised the issue, said that Sachin Vaze was reporting directly to the Shiv Sena leadership. Maharashtra logs 23k+ cases, most since September 17, Mumbai adds 2.3k

Maharashtra reported a significant spike in daily Covid-19 cases on Wednesday, adding 23,179, the highest in six months (cases numbered 24,619 on September 17, 2020). The increase was 30% over Tuesday, taking the state’s caseload to 23,70,507. To put the spike in perspective, from March 1 to March 17, daily cases in the state have gone up four times. Also, Covid fatalities in the state have crossed the 53,000 mark; after the addition of 84 deaths on Wednesday, the state’s Covid toll reached 53,080.

Senior IPS officer Sanjay Pandey on Thursday said that not just the current government but previous government has also been unjust to him. "Seniority was overlooked while making transfers and appointment among senior ranks. The current government's actions aren't as per SC orders," he said. Pandey, an IPS officer of the 1986 batch and the most senior officer in the state, has said to the chief minister after his transfer to an insignificant posting from the home guards that he does not want to be humiliated further and has decided to proceed on leave. Known to be an upright officer, Pandey was sidelined for years and on Wednesday shifted to head the Maharashtra State Security Corporation. "As Police Officer, DCP Zone 8 in 1993, I conducted a just investigation against the party (Shiv Sena) in areas near Kherwadi... The govt is too large a body to settle scores with me. If they are, we are not in safe hands," Pandey added. On Wednesday, former Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh was handed over the charge of Maharashtra's Home Guard department.
