
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that the city’s first personal rapid transit system in Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) will see Phase I completed within 20 months, marking a milestone in urban mobility.

Devendra Fadnavis performed the bhoomi pujan for the 3.36-km Phase I stretch, formally launching construction work, with Deputy CM Eknath Shinde and Sunetra Pawar present at the ceremony.

The project is being implemented by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) as part of a broader plan to enhance urban transport connectivity in Mumbai’s commercial hub.

The initial corridor will connect Kurla terminal station with Bandra East terminal station, passing through major locations including LBS Marg, MMRDA Pay and Park (G Block), BDB Gate 11, Kalanagar, Old MMRDA building, and excise department.

The project is part of an 8.85-km network with 22 stations, designed to offer first- and last-mile connectivity across BKC, Kurla, and Bandra East, reducing the need for multiple transport modes. (AI Image)

Officials stated the six-seater pods are fully automated, battery-operated, and capable of running at speeds up to 40 kmph with a headway of just 15 seconds, stopping only at stations selected by passengers. (AI Image)

The pod taxi network will integrate with Metro Line 3 at BKC and Metro Line 2B near ITO and IL&FS, creating a multi-modal transport system for smoother commuter transitions. (AI Image)

Devendra Fadnavis emphasized that hurdles from government agencies would be resolved quickly, stating: "A person alighting either from the metro or a suburban train will not be required to use another mode of public transport thereafter. He can reach within a distance of 100 to 150 metres by this pod taxi," highlighting the project’s role in cutting travel time and promoting eco-friendly mobility.
