Pune: Cybercrooks cheated a 63-year-old retired man of Rs 53.11 lakh between July 7 and Aug 22 by promising him good returns after investing in online share trading.
The man filed a complaint with the cybercrime police in Kothrud and after verification, a formal FIR was registered with the Kothrud police on Tuesday.
According to the Kothrud police, the victim worked with a private company in Nagpur and moved to Pune after retirement.
Senior inspector Sandeep Deshmane of Kothrud police said, "The victim received a message from the suspects on his messaging application in July. The message stated that he could earn a handsome amount of money by investing in the online trade of shares."
"The victim then replied to the message and the suspect asked him to download software to trade the shares and shared the URL link for the same," he said.
"The victim traded shares by himself on the application, but the suspects asked him to invest in high-value stocks to generate more profit," he said.
"The fraudsters promised to help him and shared details of five different bank accounts with him. Following this, the victim transferred money to these accounts, and within a few days, the application showed that the victim had earned a handsome profit on his investment of Rs 53.11 lakh. He decided to sell the shares and withdraw the money. He, however, could not sell and withdraw the money," Deshmane said.
