Thanjavur: A govt school teacher has been arrested near Kumbakonam and charged under the Pocso Act on Thursday for allegedly misbehaving with seven Class 10 girl students in the classroom earlier this month.
The accused has been identified as S Raja Manohar, 55, a resident of Karuppur in Kumbakonam taluk, Thanjavur district.
According to sources, on Feb 13, during a special class, Manohar reportedly scolded some students for their poor academic performance and allegedly touched them inappropriately. The affected students later informed their parents about the incident.
The parents went to school and strongly objected to the teacher's improper behaviour. As the issue escalated, Manohar went on medical leave.
The parents approached the district collector and the school education department demanding strict action against the teacher. Eventually, district child protection officer Sathya filed a complaint at the all women police station in Thiruvidaimaruthur.
Police launched an investigation, which confirmed that the teacher had misbehaved with at least seven students. Authorities arrested Manohar and registered a case against him under the Pocso Act.
Manohar was produced before a magistrate and remanded in judicial custody at Pudukottai district jail.
