Kerala CM Announcement News Live Updates: Kerala's designated CM Satheesan meets Guv, likely to take oath on May 18

Kerala CM Announcement Live: The Congress leadership has announced V D Satheesan as the new chief minister of Kerala, bringing an end to days of intense political suspense following the Assembly election results. The decision comes after nearly 10 days of internal consultations, keeping the Kerala CM race closely watched across the state.

After days of speculation following the Assembly election results, senior Congress leaders Ajay Maken and Deepa Dasmunshi held a press briefing at 12 pm, where the formal announcement was made.

The Congress Legislature Party (CLP) meeting is scheduled at the KPCC headquarters in Thiruvananthapuram, where newly elected MLAs will formally elect their legislative leader. The announcement, according to party sources, is expected to determine the next Chief Minister of Kerala, marking a crucial step in government formation.

Key contenders in the race include K C Venugopal, V D Satheesan, and Ramesh Chennithala, whose names have featured prominently in discussions at both state and national levels. Sources indicate that deliberations within the Congress high command, including consultations involving leaders brought to Delhi earlier, have played a major role in shaping the final decision.

The Congress-led UDF secured a decisive victory in the election, winning 102 out of 140 seats, marking a strong return to power after a decade. The Left Democratic Front (LDF) managed to secure 35 seats, reflecting a significant shift in voter mandate.

Ahead of the announcement, the political atmosphere in Kerala remains highly charged, with public interest centered on who will become the state’s 13th Chief Minister since its formation in 1956.

Kerala CM News: Kerala CM would not be based merely on MLAs' views, says Muraleedharan
Senior Congress leader K Muraleedharan on Tuesday said that the Kerala CM would not be decided merely based on the opinion of MLAs, instead views of the UDF partners and the general public would also be taken into consideration.

He said that since it is the UDF CM, and not just the Congress, who is being decided, the front partners' views will also have to be considered.

If the decision had to be taken just on the views of the MLAs, it would already be done by now, Muraleedharan added, while speaking to a TV channel here.

"That is why the high command decided to hold an extensive discussion on the issue," he said.

He further said that there has been a change in the Congress from the past generations in the party.

"At the time of K Karunakaran, A K Antony or Oommen Chandy, there were no other options. In the poll campaigns they led, they were the choice for CM. That is not the case now," he said.

Amid uncertainty over the selection of Kerala's chief minister, the Congress high command will seek the opinions of former KPCC presidents and working presidents on Tuesday before taking a final decision on the matter.

Kerala CM News: Congress leaders in Kerala divided on UDF coalition partners' role in CM selection
The Congress leaders from Kerala appear to be divided on whether coalition partners should have a say in the CM selection as the party high command continued to hold talks with senior leaders in the southern state.

Leaders who have been called to Delhi by the central leadership include former KPCC presidents V M Sudheeran, Mullappally Ramachandran, K Muraleedharan, K Sudhakaran and M M Hassan.

The party has also asked senior MLA Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan and working presidents P C Vishnunath, Shafi Parambil and A P Anil Kumar to come to Delhi.

After the discussions, on the way out, Sudhakaran told reporters in Delhi that his stance on the issue has not changed and, in his view, MLAs' views should be considered when deciding the CM.

Radhakrishnan said that he communicated his views to the high command and answered their queries to the best of his ability as a party worker.

On whether the UDF coalition party, the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) should have a say in the matter, he asked reporters in Delhi why it was being "dragged" into the issue.

'White smoke can be expected soon': KPCC chief on Kerala CM selection
KPCC chief Sunny Joseph on Tuesday used terminology associated with the election of the Pope at the Vatican to indicate that the Congress high command may soon arrive at a decision on Kerala's next chief minister.

"White smoke can be expected soon," Joseph told reporters, referring to the prolonged discussions within the party over the selection of the chief minister after the Congress-led UDF's victory in the Assembly elections.

However, he refrained from specifying any timeframe for the announcement.

"It is expected at the earliest. The high command can take an appropriate decision after necessary consultations," he said, as the party leadership in New Delhi continued discussions to break the deadlock over the chief ministerial choice.

Asked about the swearing-in of the new government, Joseph said the newly elected chief minister would take a decision on government formation after meeting Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar.

The KPCC chief also admitted that the delay in announcing the chief minister and the public tussle within the party had overshadowed the scale of the UDF's electoral victory.

"I do admit that. But the grace of the victory will be enhanced once the new government comes to power," he added.
