On Tuesday, Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan chaired a high-level meeting with chiefs of the BSF, NSG, and Assam Rifles, among others, to assess the situation. Ceasefire violations by Pakistani troops have continued for the fifth consecutive night, expanding to the Akhnoor sector. In response, Indian forces have intensified their anti-terror operations in the Kashmir valley. Prime Minister Narendra Modi vowed to track down and punish those behind the massacre. An all-party meeting echoed the call for decisive action, signalling unified political backing for a tough stance against terrorism and cross-border provocations.

Pakistan's jailed former PM Imran Khan terms Pahalgam attack 'deeply disturbing and tragic'
Imprisoned former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan called the Pahalgam terror attack "deeply disturbing and tragic," urging India to respond with restraint and responsibility in the aftermath of the incident.

“Loss of human life in Pahlgam incident is deeply disturbing and tragic. I extend my deepest condolences to the victims and their families. When the False Flag Palwama Operation incident happened, we offered to extend all-out cooperation to India but India failed to produce any concrete evidence. As I predicted in 2019, the same is happening again after Pahlgam incident. Instead of introspection and investigation, Modi Sarkar is again placing the blame on Pakistan. Being a country of 1.5 billion people, India needs to act responsibly instead of messing with a region already known as “nuclear flashpoint.” Peace is our priority but it should not be mistaken as cowardice. Pakistan has got all the capabilities to give a befitting response to any Indian misadventure, as My Government, backed by whole nation, did in 2019. I have always emphasized the importance of the Kashmiris’ right to self-determination, as guaranteed by United Nations resolutions," he said.

"I have also been highlighting the fact that India led by RSS ideology is a grave threat, not only to the region but beyond it. Indian oppression in Kashmir, intensified after the illegal abrogation of Article 370, has further fueled the Kashmiri people’s desire for freedom. Sadly, the nation has been divided by an illegitimate government imposed through fraudulent Form-47 results. And yet, ironically, Narendra Modi’s aggression has united the people of Pakistan in one voice against Indian hostility. While we reject this fake regime, we stand firmly as one Pakistani nation and strongly condemn Modi's war-mongering and his dangerous ambitions that threaten regional peace. Needless to say, to win the war against an external enemy, the nation must first be united. It is high time to put a halt to all actions that are further polarizing the nation. The state’s excessive focus on political victimisation at this critical time is deepening internal divisions and undermining the nation’s collective ability to confront external threats. It is naive to expect any strong stance from self-serving figures like Nawaz Sharif and Asif Zardari. They will never speak out against India because their illegal wealth and business interests lie abroad. They profit from foreign investments, and to protect those financial interests, they remain silent in the face of foreign aggression and baseless allegations against Pakistan. Their fear is simple: that Indian lobbies might freeze their offshore assets if they dare to speak the truth,” he added.

Pahalgam Terror Attack: BSF lodges protest with Pak Rangers on jawan's apprehension
The Border Security Force (BSF) has lodged a protest with Pakistan Rangers in the case of apprehension of a jawan a week back after he had mistakenly crossed the international border in Punjab, official sources said on Tuesday. Earlier such inadvertent crossings on either side were resolved quickly, but this time the Pakistani side has remained "non-committal" on the whereabouts and the date of return of the jawan which could be due to rising India-Pakistan tensions after the Pahalgam attack, they said.

The border force has also instituted an inquiry into the incident where Constable Purnam Kumar Shaw of the 24th battalion was caught by the Rangers on April 23 after the jawan inadvertently crossed the IB along the Ferozepur district.

Officials told PTI that a protest note has been sent to Pakistan Rangers and they have remained "non-committal" on the whereabouts and the date of return of the jawan.

About 4-5 flag meetings have taken place between the two sides but there is no final word on his return. A protest note has been given to the sector commander of the Rangers by the BSF, the officials said.

They said that the jawan is understood to have been moved to a Rangers' base along the Lahore-Amritsar sector and may be handed over to the BSF soon. The Rangers have maintained a stoic silence and have neither issued a protest note nor communicated about his condition, they said.

Social media handles from Pakistan had issued pictures of Shaw last week where he was seen blindfolded and sitting in a vehicle and standing under a tree with his rifle, magazine with bullets, belt and other belongings kept on the ground, according to officials.

The jawan was part of the 'Kisan Guard' that was deployed for the protection of Indian farmers who till their land near the border fence and the trooper apparently "miscalculated" the alignment of the IB and stepped on the other side to rest under a nearby tree from where he was apprehended by the Rangers, officials said.

Meanwhile, Shaw's pregnant wife and son reached Punjab on Monday and met senior officers of his unit who assured her that he would be back soon, they said.

"Efforts are on to secure his release. Possibly the Pakistani establishment is weighing its options given the current state of situation between the two countries in the backdrop of the Pahalgam terrorist attack. Earlier such inadvertent crossings on either side were resolved quickly," a senior officer said. Sahu hails from Rishra in Hooghly district of West Bengal.

China reiterates call for India, Pakistan to exercise restraint By K J M Varma
China on Tuesday reiterated its call for India and Pakistan to exercise restraint, saying their harmonious coexistence is vital to the peace, stability and development of the region.

Both India and Pakistan are important countries in South Asia, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Guo Jiakun told a media briefing here.
Guo made the remarks in response to a question on the exchange of gunfire by the troops of the two countries following the Pahalgam terror attack that left 26 people dead.

“Their harmonious coexistence is vital to the peace, stability and development of the region," Guo said.

As the neighbour of the two countries, China calls on the two sides to exercise restraint, properly handle differences through dialogue and consultation, and jointly keep the region peaceful and stable, he said.

Guo on Monday made a similar remark on the tensions between India and Pakistan and said it welcomed all measures to “cool down” the current situation between the two neighbours.

“As a common neighbour of India and Pakistan, China hopes that both sides will exercise restraint, meet each other halfway, properly handle relevant differences through dialogue and consultation, and jointly maintain regional peace and stability," he said.

While China strongly condemned the terror attack, its first reaction on the rising tensions between the two countries came after Pakistan's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar called China's top diplomat Wang Yi on Sunday and sought Beijing's support. Wang had the phone call with Dar upon his request, state-run Global Times reported.

Javed Akhtar speaks on Pakistani artists in India: 'Both sides have valid points'
In a recent statement, Javed Akhtar shared his views on whether Pakistani artists should be allowed to perform in India. Akhtar raised two logical points in his response, both of which highlight the complex relationship between India and Pakistan. He said, "The first question should be whether we should allow the Pakistani artists here. There are two answers, both of them are equally logical."

Akhtar pointed out that India has always welcomed Pakistani artists, citing figures like Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Ghulam Ali, and Noor Jahan, who received warm receptions in the country. He also mentioned the late poet Faiz Ahmad Faiz, who was treated with the utmost respect during his visit to India under the AB Vajpayee regime. However, Akhtar expressed concern that this warmth has not been reciprocated, saying, "I am afraid, this has never been reciprocated, I mean, I have no complain with the people of Pakistan."

Akhtar also noted the situation regarding Lata Mangeshkar, who, despite being loved by both Indian and Pakistani audiences, never performed in Pakistan due to systemic barriers. He stated, "Big poets of Pakistan has written for the songs of Lata Mangeshkar. She was hands down most popular artist in India and Pakistan in the 60's and 70's, but why there was not a single performance of Lata Mangeshkar in Pakistan?"

On the other hand, Akhtar also acknowledged the potential consequences of blocking Pakistani artists, stating, "If we block Pakistani artists, who are we pleasing in Pakistan? The Army and the fundamentalist, this is what they want? They want distance, it suits them." He concluded by stating that both sides have valid arguments, but at this moment, his position is clear: "I would say no."

Her appeal follows a controversial remark by Maharashtra Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar, who questioned claims that the terrorists identified victims based on their religion. Jagdale, recounting the trauma, said, “I still see the man with the rifle every time I close my eyes. We witnessed everything. Don’t play politics with our grief.”

"According to you Congress should guarantee foolproof intelligence to BJP and nothing should be asked of BJP," he said.

Pahalgam Attack Live: The Union government has escalated security and diplomatic responses following the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which killed 26 civilians, mostly tourists. In a major development, Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan chaired a high-level security meeting on Tuesday with the chiefs of key paramilitary forces including the Border Security Force (BSF), National Security Guard (NSG), and Assam Rifles.

Senior officers from the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) and other security agencies also attended. While specific discussions were not disclosed, the meeting reflects the growing urgency at the national level to respond to the attack and prevent further incidents.

In parallel, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has officially taken over the probe. Under the direction of the Union ministry of home affairs, the NIA has deployed multiple teams—led by senior officers—to investigate the massacre. Forensic and technical experts are on the ground, closely examining entry and exit points, collecting evidence, and questioning witnesses to reconstruct the sequence of events and determine the attackers’ modus operandi.

On the diplomatic front, India has suspended the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty, accusing Pakistan of violating its terms. The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) also ordered all Pakistani nationals—excluding those with diplomatic or long-term visas—to leave India by April 29. Following this, Home Minister Amit Shah contacted chief ministers of all states to ensure enforcement of this directive. Home Secretary Govind Mohan also conducted a video conference with state chief secretaries, emphasising that no Pakistani with revoked visa status should remain in the country beyond the deadline.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a strong statement on April 24, vowed to track and punish every terrorist and their backers behind the Pahalgam attack, stating that they would be pursued to the "ends of the earth." At an all-party meeting held the same day, political leaders unanimously called for decisive action and extended full support to the Centre.

Meanwhile, cross-border tensions have sharply increased, with Pakistani forces violating the ceasefire along the Line of Control (LoC) for the fifth consecutive night. On Tuesday, firing expanded to the Akhnoor sector of Jammu district, adding to the already volatile atmosphere along the border. The Indian Army has continued retaliatory actions in response to these provocations.

Back in Kashmir, security forces have ramped up anti-terror operations. Police in Doda district conducted coordinated raids at 13 locations to target suspected terrorist hideouts and operatives. In a particularly aggressive crackdown, nine houses linked to active terrorists have been demolished using explosives like dynamite and plastic charges, as part of a broader effort to eliminate terror infrastructure and disrupt support networks.
