Parliament Monsoon Session 2025 Live Updates: 'Statutory process set in motion,' says RS Chairman Dhankhar on impeachment motion against Justice Yashwant Varma
The Monsoon Session of Parliament began on Monday, with the government expressing willingness to discuss issues of “national importance” — including Operation Sindoor and US President Donald Trump’s claim of brokering a ceasefire between India and Pakistan.
At a pre-session meeting with floor leaders, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said the government was “open to discussion within rules and conventions.” However, there was no assurance on debating Bihar’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls, which the Opposition fears could disenfranchise marginalised communities.
Congress MPs Gaurav Gogoi and Pramod Tiwari pressed for debates on the Pahalgam terror attack, electoral reforms, and Trump’s ceasefire claim. Tiwari also criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s foreign tour during the session, accusing him of ignoring his responsibilities at home.
The government, meanwhile, is pushing ahead with its legislative agenda. Several key bills are lined up, including the Manipur GST (Amendment) Bill, the National Sports Governance Bill, and amendments to the Indian Institutes of Management Act. Reforms in taxation, anti-doping rules, and the shipping and mining sectors are also on the table.
The session, scheduled to continue until 21 August, is likely to see fierce exchanges between the government and the Opposition over national security, governance, and India’s foreign policy stance.

On the Monsoon session of Parliament set to begin today, Congress MP Jebi Mather says, "At the time when our country was facing a dangerous phase, the INDIA alliance had asked for a special session of Parliament to know the real status, but till now there are no answers to many questions. There are multiple issues for which the government should provide answers. But the government deviates from what is relevant and more important. INDIA alliance has given priority to issues which are important to the country, and the government should be willing to discuss them."

Congress MP Manickam Tagore on Monday submitted an Adjournment Motion notice in the Lok Sabha to discuss the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor, calling it a matter of "urgent and serious national importance." Addressing Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Tagore's notice cited serious intelligence lapses, foreign policy concerns, and repeated claims by US President Donald Trump regarding India’s ceasefire with Pakistan.
"Matter: Glaring security lapses that led to the Pahalgam terror attack, the questionable foreign policy handling in the aftermath of Operation Sindoor... and the conspicuous silence of the Hon'ble Prime Minister even after 24 public statements by the US President taking credit for India's ceasefire," the notice stated.
He raised six key points, including the loss of 26 lives in Pahalgam, alleged lack of transparency on whether five Indian jets were downed, and concern over disclosures by the Chief of Defence Staff abroad. Tagore urged that all other business be suspended to address the matter.
Simultaneously, Congress MP Randeep Surjewala submitted a Suspension of Business notice in the Rajya Sabha under Rule 267, writing, "That this House suspend Zero Hour and the relevant rules... to discuss the concerns arising out of the tragic terror attack in Pahalgam and India's response through Operation Sindoor."

The notice states, "That this House adjourns to discuss the grave lapses in internal security that led to the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, resulting in tragic loss of innocent lives, the cross-border terror emanating from Pakistan; and to deliberate on the foreign policy actions of the government following the ceasefire with Pakistan after Operation Sindoor."
Chowdhury also raised concerns over US President Donald Trump’s repeated claims of mediating a ceasefire between India and Pakistan. Her notice reads, "The matter becomes even more serious in light of US President Donald Trump's repeated public statements—made 24 times so far, most recently on July 19—claiming that he personally mediated the ceasefire between India and Pakistan and used trade leverage to end hostilities."
She warned that such claims, "if true, would violate the provisions of the Shimla Agreement, which prohibits third-party mediation on India-Pakistan matters."

Congress MP K Suresh criticised the central government for prioritising its legislative agenda while ignoring pressing national and international issues. He urged the government to provide a platform for opposition voices in Parliament, accusing it of sidelining meaningful debate despite the opposition’s repeated offers of cooperation.
While speaking to ANI, Suresh said, "At the same time, the government has to give an opportunity to opposition parties inside the House, as there are a number of issues. The government is always interested in conducting government business, but there are also numerous people's issues and national, as well as international, concerns."
He added, "In every session, we are assuring cooperation with the government. Every session, we are ensuring all party meetings."
Criticising the lack of response from ministers, he said, "When we are asking for time from the government to discuss those issues, the government is not ready to talk, the ministers are also not ready to reply, so that's why the opposition parties are agitating."

Congress MP Pramod Tiwari shared details of the INDIA Alliance’s strategy meeting held on 19 July, ahead of the Monsoon Session of Parliament. He stated that the alliance has finalised its approach, focusing on the Pahalgam terror attack, Operation Sindoor, and repeated statements made by US President Donald Trump.
Tiwari told ANI, "Yesterday, a detailed discussion on formulating strategy for the upcoming session regarding the crisis in which the nation has been pushed into by the BJP-NDA Government. It was a joint effort held in a conducive environment. I am happy to tell you that keeping national interest as supreme, it has been decided against the BJP's activities that are weakening the country, its democracy and economy."
He raised concerns over Trump’s remarks, stating, *"A shocking statement was made that five fighter jets were shot down. The defence attache also said the same. CDS too said the same. This disturbs us."

Monsoon Session 2025 News: 'Opposition looks for excuses to avoid discussion,' say BJP MP Anurag Thakur
BJP MP Anurag Thakur on Sunday asserted that the NDA government has consistently shown a willingness to debate every issue raised in Parliament over the past 11 years. He criticised the Opposition for avoiding meaningful discussion, stating, "In the last 11 years, the BJP and NDA have discussed almost every issue that the opposition and the ruling side wanted to discuss in the House. The opposition looks for excuses to avoid discussion... I would say that we are ready to discuss all issues related to the public and the country... The opposition often shies away from debate."
Speaking in Punjab’s Bathinda, Thakur responded to queries regarding PM Modi's absence from the all-party meeting held in New Delhi, emphasising that the Prime Minister always attends Parliament when necessary. "Whenever any question related to PM Modi arises in Parliament, he is present in the House... If the Prime Minister has to attend any important meeting, it is in the interest of the nation," he stated.
Thakur noted that this year's Monsoon Session, from 21 July to 21 August, was extended beyond the usual August 15 end date to allow for more debate and legislative business. PM Modi is expected to address the media before the session begins.

BJP MP Jagdambika Pal on Monday criticised the Opposition ahead of the Monsoon Session of Parliament, accusing them of lacking "real issues" and merely seeking to disrupt proceedings.
Speaking to ANI, Pal said, "The Speaker gives time to raise all issues (in the House). In such a situation, disrupting the House is a waste of the public's hard-earned money and a waste of the House's time. They (the opposition) can ask questions, they can hold the government accountable, but despite this, they have no real issue."
He further commented, "Rahul Gandhi has so far blamed EVMs for his defeat, and now he is raising questions on the voter list in Bihar. I think there is no real issue. I hope the House will run smoothly."
