Aviation minister says govt can cap air fares in extraordinary situations
NEW DELHI: Union civil aviation minister Ram Mohan Naidu told the Lok Sabha on Friday that while India’s aviation sector operates in a deregulated environment, the government retains the authority to cap airfares during extraordinary circumstances under the Aircraft Act.
Addressing concerns triggered by recent disruptions, the minister said, "While India’s aviation market is deregulated, the govt retains powers under the Aircraft Act to cap fares in extraordinary situations. Examples include COVID-19, Mahakumbh, Pahalgam-Srinagar crises, and the recent Indigo disruption."
He added that the government intervenes only to protect passenger interests while ensuring that competition in the market remains unaffected. The minister also said Alliance Air continues to play a vital role in regional connectivity. "Alliance Air continues to operate critical routes, especially in the Northeast, ensuring connectivity to underserved areas," he noted.

Friday marks the fifth and final day of the penultimate week of Parliament’s brief Winter Session, which began on December 1 and is set to end on December 19.
Two major issues have dominated proceedings so far: the national song Vande Mataram and electoral reforms, pushed by the government and the opposition respectively. Both were taken up for debate this week.
The ruling BJP, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accused the Congress of removing stanzas from Vande Mataram—which completed 150 years on November 7—in an attempt to “appease” a particular community. The Congress-led opposition countered by alleging that the government sought discussions on Vande Mataram because its author, Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, was Bengali and West Bengal is headed for assembly elections in April–May 2026.
