It covers the Purbasthali II community development block area and is situated in the fertile Hooghly-Damodar plain, which supports extensive paddy and vegetable cultivation. The seat has a significant Scheduled Caste and Other Backward Class population. In 2021, TMC's Tapan Chatterjee won the seat, with the BJP polling about 40 per cent of the vote. In 2016, the TMC also held Purbasthali Uttar. The constituency has been in TMC hands since 2011. The 2026 contest sees the TMC field Vasundhara Goswami, a new candidate replacing Tapan Chatterjee. The BJP's Gopal Chattopadhyay and Congress's Amitava Bhattacharya offer the opposition. Given the BJP's competitive 2021 performance, despite losing, Purbasthali Uttar is not an easy seat for the TMC. The shift to a new candidate introduces some uncertainty, and the BJP may attempt to convert its prior vote share gains into an outright victory.
