A. Karthik of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) won the Srivilliputhur constituency, with CPI candidate P. Mahalingam finishing in second place. Other candidates in the fray included M. Chandra Prabha (AIADMK), A. Karikalapandiyan (NTK), and Dr. Shyam Krishnaswamy (PT).
Srivilliputhur (SC), located in Virudhunagar district, is a reserved constituency that has largely leaned towards the AIADMK in recent election cycles. According to 2011 Census estimates, the constituency has a significant rural presence, with Scheduled Castes making up a substantial portion of the population.
In the 2021 Assembly elections, AIADMK’s E. M. Manraj won with 70,475 votes, defeating INC’s P.
S. W. Madhava Rao, who tragically passed away during the election, by a margin of 12,738 votes. This victory continued a trend of AIADMK success; in 2016, M. Chandra Prabha won with 88,103 votes against Puthiya Tamilagam’s C. Muthukumar, and in 2011, V. Ponnupandi secured the seat.
Historically, since the 1977 elections, the AIADMK has dominated the constituency with seven victories, while the CPI has won twice. The 2026 campaign has focused on welfare schemes and social justice, with the opposition AIADMK and its allies challenging the DMK-led government on issues of local development and governance. The entry of Dr. Shyam Krishnaswamy of Puthiya Tamilagam (PT) and TVK’s A. Karthik adds a multi-cornered dimension to this historically AIADMK-leaning seat.
