'From oil and gas to S-400; value of Russian friendship proven,' said Shashi Tharoor
"It's hugely significant. First of all, it is a very important relationship, which has been for a long time. In today's rather turbulent world, where so many relationships have become uncertain, it becomes important to shore up the ones we have. Secondly, the value of Russian friendship has been proven in recent years, particularly in two domains. We've had a lot of oil and gas from Russia in recent years, and the value of defence imports from Russia was demonstrated once again during Operation Sindoor when the S-400 protected us from a number of Pakistani missiles that were targeting our cities, including Delhi," he said.

"No one should misunderstand that this will affect our relationships with other countries, because India has the capacity to have independent relationships with different governments. We are a nation that has always believed in sovereign autonomy. Our autonomy to decide our friendships, our partnerships and our national interests is encoded in our DNA," he added.

'Both in India and Russia, there're lot of qualified specialists who are in demand across the globe': Yaroslav Lissovolik, founder, Brics+ Analytics, member of the Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC)
"The way to address this is to explore all of the opportunities in mutual trade. Not all of the opportunities are fully explored. The imbalance in bilateral trade was raised as an issue by India several months ago at the Brics meeting... This is not just an imbalance with Russia; this is an imbalance with some of the other Brics economies... Some of the possible solutions include mutual trade liberalisation and a greater presence of Indian goods in the markets of Brics economies," he said.

"Types of exports that are very strong and very important coming from India... Another spirit that hasn't been targeted to a greater degree before is services and the possibility to cooperate and trade in the services sector, including IT and AI-related services. During this visit, the Russian president has already indicated that AI cooperation could be an important area. Both in India and in Russia, there are a lot of qualified specialists who are in demand across the globe. There is tremendous scope for cooperation in such areas that can even out these imbalances... There's still a low base of the overall volume of trade and the degree to which the trade opportunities are being explored. There is a lot more that could be done on both sides," he added.

'Putin's visit is a crucial jump during the development of economic ties between the two countries': Yaroslav Lissovolik, founder, Brics+ Analytics, member of the Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC)
"This (President Putin's visit) is a crucial jump during the development of economic ties between the two countries. We've seen a very significant rise in mutual trade and trade turnover over the past several years. The trade by the end of last year amounted to almost $70 billion. That's a very significant rise compared to the preceding years. But there's clearly a substantial scope for further growth. Policy makers in both countries are looking to set more ambitious goals for mutual trade, and some of the goals that have been thrown around in recent months have been close to $100 billion as the mutual trade target for the two countries," he said.

"There's tremendous potential and unexplored opportunities. Both countries are starting to cooperate more actively in various international forums, whether the G20 or BRICS. This cooperation is very productive in terms of trade, investment and overall spirit of economic cooperation. Even though relations between India and Russia and the then Soviet Union have always been friendly, there's always a possibility to improve the past track record further... This relationship between the two countries is developing very productively," he added.

Putin India Visit Live: Piyush Goyal highlights Russia's support for India in 'good and bad times'
Union commerce & industry minister Piyush Goyal, speaking at the India–Russia Business Forum in New Delhi on Thursday, said Russia has always been “India’s Sukh Dukh Ka Saathi,” a companion in both good and difficult times.

"India-Russia trade has made remarkable strides, with volumes nearing USD 70 billion, yet immense potential remains untapped, as India's share in Russia's imports is still under 2 per cent, a figure that does not capture the true ambition of our partnership. Our shared focus is to foster more balanced and mutually rewarding trade, aiming to exceed USD 100 billion by 2030, driven by stronger Indian exports. We see particularly promising avenues for collaboration in consumer goods, food and agriculture, pharmaceuticals and medical supplies, telecom and electronics, industrial components, and the mobility of skilled talent," Goyal said, as cited by ANI.

Putin India Visit Live: India, Russia eye major fighter upgrades and S-400 missile deal
During Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to India, both sides are expected to take up several major defence projects, including the second overhauling of the Su-30 fighter jets, the possible supply of long-range R-37 air-to-air missiles with a strike range of over 200 km, and cooperation on S-400/500 long-range and Verba very short-range air defence systems.

Defence sources said discussions will also cover the sale of around 280 missiles for the S-400 air defence system, which was used successfully against Pakistan Air Force fighter jets and surveillance aircraft in May this year.

"The Su-30 second overhaul project proposed to be in partnership with Russia would be to upgrade the capabilities of the Su-30MKIs and bring them to the very latest standards,” defence sources told ANI.

The plan would cover around 100 of the 272 Su-30MKI aircraft in the Indian Air Force fleet. This project would be separate from the indigenous upgrade of 84 Su-30s to be carried out by Indian agencies such as Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), they added.
