Emma Raducanu’s repeated withdrawals including Linz Open hint at deeper fitness concerns after February viral infection setback

It has been a frustrating few weeks for Emma Raducanu. The British star has pulled out of another tournament, and this time it is the Linz Open. Her team confirmed that she is still dealing with a viral illness that began earlier this year. Because of this, she is not yet ready to return to full competition.

This comes shortly after she also withdrew from the Miami Open. At the same time, she skipped Great Britain’s Billie Jean King Cup qualifier against Australia. Right now, her main focus is simple, get fully fit before stepping back on court. The hope is that she could return later this month at the Madrid Open, but nothing is confirmed yet.

Emma Raducanu struggles with post-viral symptoms as comeback plans shift

Raducanu last played at Indian Wells on March 8. That match did not go her way. She lost 6-1, 6-1 to Amanda Anisimova in the third round. After the match, she spoke honestly about how she felt on court.

“I need to obviously be aggressive when playing those players, but I think there’s still a long way to go to be doing that and I need to use my strengths and probably mix it up a bit more,” she said.

It was clear she was not at her best physically. The illness she picked up in Romania in early February has stayed with her longer than expected. These post-viral symptoms have affected her energy levels and power, which are key parts of her game.

Because of that, her team has decided not to rush things. Instead of pushing through tournaments, she is focusing on recovery and training. The aim is to return stronger rather than risk another setback.

There are also changes happening off the court. Since parting ways with coach Francisco Roig in January, Raducanu has been working in a more flexible setup. She is currently training with Mark Petchey on an informal basis. This setup gives her more control as she rebuilds her game and fitness.

For now, everything depends on how her body responds in the coming days. The Madrid Open is seen as a possible return point, but only if she feels ready. There is no pressure from her team to rush back. Right now, the focus is clear. Health comes first. Tennis can wait a little longer.
