“I want to protect my sister”: Leylah Fernandez refuses to let sister Bianca date tennis players as her surprising comment quickly goes viral online

Leylah Fernandez gave a funny but honest answer when she was asked a simple question during a Tennis Channel segment. The Canadian star was asked which tennis player she would allow her sister to date. Instead of naming someone, she made it very clear that the answer was no one. Her reaction quickly caught attention online because of how real and unexpected it sounded.

The moment came during a light conversation with players from the WTA and ATP Tours. While many gave playful answers, Fernandez took a different route. She spoke about her younger sister Bianca and explained why she would not want her to date anyone from the tennis world. Her response was short, but it said everything.

Leylah Fernandez did not hold back when giving her answer. She said, “No one. Honestly it’s not because I want to protect my sister, I want to protect the guys.” The line quickly became a talking point among fans. It was funny, but it also showed her personality and how close she is with her family.

Leylah Fernandez has two sisters, Jodeci and Bianca. The three share a very strong bond. They often spend time together and give small glimpses of their life off the court. Bianca is also involved in tennis and currently plays at the college level for the UCLA Bruins. Because of that, the sisters understand each other’s world very well.

Their connection also shows on the court. In 2024, Leylah and Bianca played together in the doubles event at the National Bank Open. It was a special moment for both of them. Talking about that experience, Leylah shared one memory that stood out. She said, “My personal favorite, the top, top notch is when she was, as she likes to say, like gave me a reality check during one of the matches.”

She explained how that moment helped her during the match. “Sometimes I do need it… she was strong enough and brave enough to tell me what to do and how she viewed the match, and that kind of snapped me out of my little funk there.” It showed how honest they are with each other, even in tough situations.

Away from tennis, her sisters play an important role in her life. In an interview with Clay Tennis, Leylah said, “Tennis is incredibly important to me, but I know it isn’t my whole life, and it won’t last forever.” She added, “I have my sisters’ support, and whenever I get home, we always go out and do something fun. They help me disconnect.”

On the court, Leylah Fernandez recently competed at Indian Wells, where she lost in the opening round to Katerina Siniakova. Now, she is getting ready for the Miami Open, where she will look to bounce back and find better form.
