Reports suggest Matthews suffered a Grade 3 MCL tear and quad contusion following the collision. The team later confirmed that his medical recommendations indicate that he will not return to play in the final stretch of the calendar.

Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews will probably undergo surgery as part of his recovery from his severe Grade 3 MCL injury sustained in a brutal collision with Anaheim Ducks defenseman Radko Gudas during an NHL match. This was stated by NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman, who stated that surgery is likely part of the plan moving forward.

Speaking on Matthews’ health update, Friedman stated, “We’ll see when it happens, but it sounds like surgery will be part of Auston Matthews’ recovery. There is still plenty of confidence he will start next season on time.” He is also of the opinion that, despite the severity of the injury, the player will appear next season on time.


Earlier, following the incident, the NHL’s Department of Player Safety imposed a five-game suspension on the Anaheim Ducks defenseman Radko Gudas. According to reports, he will forfeit $104,166.65 in salary during the suspension.

Due to this misconduct and the NHL’s decision, several players, including the head coach of the Leafs, Craig Berube, have voiced their opinion on the five-game suspension imposed on Gudas. Berube shared his strong dissatisfaction with the NHL's five-game suspension handed to the Anaheim Ducks defenseman Radko Gudas. He opposed the misconduct and called the hit a “dirty play.”

The injury has sidelined Matthews, and the team has confirmed that, after his knee injury, he will not return to play in the final stretch of the calendar.

Meanwhile, Matthews prolonged absence from the club has fueled speculation about the captain's future with Toronto, indicating trade moves. However, these are mere speculations, and no such trade decision has been confirmed so far by the club.
