Fire at Sam Altman’s home after Molotov cocktail attack, OpenAI San Francisco headquarters threatened; read San Francisco police's statement

A man was arrested for allegedly throwing a Molotov cocktail at Sam Altman’s home and then threatening to burn down OpenAI's San Francisco headquarters on Friday, April 10, police said. An OpenAI spokesperson confirmed the attack in a statement and said, “Early this morning, someone threw a Molotov cocktail at Sam Altman’s home and also made threats at our San Francisco headquarters. Thankfully, no one was hurt” OpenAI spokesperson Jamie Radice said, “The individual is in custody, and we’re assisting law enforcement with their investigation.”Altman, 40, lives in San Francisco and his OpenAI is also headquartered in the city. According to a post by San Francisco Police Department on X, formerly Twitter, officers responded to a fire at Altman’s North Beach residence after a man threw an “incendiary destructive device” at his home at around 4 a.m. The device caused a fire on an exterior gate and the suspect fled on foot. About an hour later, officers responded to a man threatening arson at the AI company’s office, recognizing the person as the same suspect from the attack at Altman’s home, according to the statement. Officers then detained the 20-year-old male suspect and arrested him.On April 10, 2026, at approximately 4:12 a.m., San Francisco Police officers responded to a North Beach residence regarding a fire investigation. At the scene, officers learned that an unknown male subject threw an incendiary destructive device at a home, causing a fire to an exterior gate. The suspect then fled on foot. There were no injuries reported as a result of this incident.The suspect's description was broadcast to all officers.At approximately 5:07 a.m., SFPD officers responded to a business on the 1400 block of 3rd street regarding an unknown male subject threatening to burn down the building. When officers arrived on scene, they recognized the male to be the same suspect from the earlier incident and immediately detained him.Through the course of the investigation, officers developed probable cause to place a 20-year-old male under arrest.Charges are still pending at this time.While an arrest has been made, this remains an open and active investigation.
