From flats to heels: The everyday footwear habits that could be damaging your feet
Dear women, what if the shoes you wear every day secretly damage your feet, knees, and posture? That’s exactly what orthopedic surgeon and integrative medicine specialist Dr. Kiran Shete recently explained in a viral Instagram reel that has caught the attention of thousands online. In the video, Dr. Shete rated some of the most popular footwear choices among women and shared which options are actually good for foot health and which ones could create long-term problems. From flats and crocs to flip-flops and running shoes, his honest ratings gave viewers a reality check about comfort versus style.

How has your idea of beauty changed over time?

The reel quickly became relatable because almost every woman owns at least one of these footwear styles. But according to Dr. Shete, not all trendy or comfortable-looking shoes are truly supportive for the body.

Flat ballerina shoes got the lowest score

One of the biggest surprises in the reel was the rating for flat ballerina shoes. Dr. Shete gave them just 1 out of 10 and explained that completely flat footwear often lacks arch support. Since these shoes do not properly absorb pressure while walking, they can put stress on the feet and ankles over time. Many women wear ballerina flats because they are trendy, light, and easy to pair with outfits.
But if comfort and foot health are your main concerns, it may not be the best idea to wear them all day long.

Crocs received a mixed reaction

The doctor gave Crocs a slightly better score, but not a great one. They are soft and cushioned but may not give the stability needed for routine long-term walking, said Dr. Shete. This loose construction can sometimes throw off the balance and natural foot movement. But still, they were better cushioned and more comfortable than completely flat footwear.

Narrow-toe heels can create pressure

Narrow-toe heels were another popular footwear style that was featured on the reel. In the long run this can cause pain, discomfort, and even postural problems. They already push the body weight forward, and a tight toe design means they can be even more stressful on the feet.

Flip-flops may feel comfortable but have drawbacks

Flip-flops are a summer favourite, but according to Dr. Shete, they are not ideal for continuous use. In the reel, he explained that the feet constantly struggle to hold the slippers in place while walking. This creates unnecessary strain on muscles and affects natural movement. Since flip-flops also provide very little heel and arch support, wearing them for long durations can eventually lead to foot fatigue.

Running shoes topped the list

The best shoes in the video were running shoes with enough arch support and shock absorption. Dr. Shete gave them high marks and said they are one of the safest options for daily use. The explanation is simple. Running shoes are meant to distribute pressure evenly, support movement and minimize impact on joints. Also they help you to have a better posture when you walk for long time. Supportive sports shoes are a life changer for women who spend the day on their feet, walking or commuting.

Wedges were a better alternative to heels

The orthopedic specialist, interestingly, had a pretty good rating for wedges. Wedges are better for your balance and distribute your body weight better than pointed heels. Not always the best for a whole day on your feet, but often considered safer than stilettos.

Why this reel resonated with people

The reel became popular because it addressed a common everyday habit that many people ignore. Most women choose footwear based on appearance, trend, or matching outfits, but Dr. Shete reminded viewers that foot health directly affects the knees, hips, spine, and overall posture. So the next time you shop for shoes, style may still matter, but your feet will probably thank you for choosing comfort and support first.
