BHOPAL: The special
CBI court on Friday sent mother-in-law, former judge Giribala Singh, and husband
Samarth Singh to five-day CBI custody till June 2 in connection with the Twisha Sharma death case.
The central agency had sought a five-day remand for Giribala Singh and an extension of custody for Samarth Singh as part of its ongoing probe into the alleged dowry death case.
The CBI will question both the accused.
The CBI took Giribala Singh into custody a day after the Madhya Pradesh high court quashed her anticipatory bail on Wednesday.
This comes after the Madhya Pradesh high court’s order setting aside a May 15 order of a Bhopal sessions court that had granted anticipatory bail to Singh.
Justice Devnarayan Mishra, while allowing petitions challenging the relief, observed that the trial court had failed to adequately appreciate material available in the case diary, witness statements and allegations levelled by the deceased’s family before granting protection from arrest.
In its order, the high court noted that statements recorded from Twisha Sharma’s family members since May 13 contained allegations that Giribala Singh, along with her son, had allegedly subjected the deceased to harassment and pressured her to terminate her pregnancy.
The court further observed that WhatsApp chats, coupled with postmortem findings indicating multiple ante-mortem injuries, warranted a deeper probe.
The high court also took note of submissions made by the prosecution and the CBI that Giribala Singh had allegedly not cooperated fully with the investigation despite notices issued to her. The agency submitted that custodial interrogation could be necessary considering the seriousness of allegations and the stage of investigation.
Twisha Sharma, a Noida resident, married Bhopal-based Samarth Singh in December 2025. After her death on May 12, her family accused her in-laws of subjecting her to dowry-related harassment.
