Salt department sources said substantial damage sustained in Vedaranyam salt pans. Vedaranyam is the second largest salt producer after Tuticorin. Referring to Ockhi cyclone, the fisheries minister said that based on the past experience , we have taken necessary steps to ensure the safety of fishermen and protect their equipment and boats. There are 4926 mechanised boats and 18364 country crafts in the coastal districts.
