A stretch of Buckingham Canal from Kasturba Nagar junction to Thiruvanmiyur is being upgraded with new elements, including walkways, cycling tracks, and Miyawaki forests, at a cost of Rs 45 crore.

The project plans continuous pedestrian walkways, dedicated cycling tracks, children’s play areas, and seating facilities to encourage community use along the canal.

Native saplings will be planted, and dense Miyawaki forests developed to improve air quality, support local biodiversity, and create green pockets in the southern corridor.

Nature-based drainage systems are included to address frequent flooding in low-lying areas along the canal, enhancing resilience against monsoon-related waterlogging.

The initiative combines environmental restoration with public utility, offering residents open spaces, cleaner surroundings, and improved recreational infrastructure.

The southern corridor’s canal-side stretch is key for connectivity and urban development, making the project significant for both ecological and community planning.

Locals welcome the green corridor, hoping it will improve water flow, reduce flooding, and provide sustainable, well-maintained public spaces.
