CHENNAI: Three women were arrested in Salem district on Wednesday night on charges of performing illegal abortion.A 25-year-old woman from Thalaivasal, who was four months pregnant, was admitted to a private hospital in Salem on Monday after undergoing illegal gender identification and an abortion. Salem district health department joint director Dr S Nandhini was informed about the case, and she conducted a thorough investigation. The woman’s husband was an agricultural labourer, and the couple already have two daughters.“Investigations revealed that three women from areas near Thalaivasal had performed abortion,” Dr Nandhini said. She added that the Thalaivasal police arrested K Madhubala, 47, V Bhuvaneswari, 40, S Gowri, 38. They were remanded in judicial custody.
