Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami on Wednesday met the families of workers rescued from the Silkyara tunnel in Dehradun. Earlier, the workers rescued from the Silkyara tunnel were airlifted to AIIMS-Rishikesh for a health check-up on Wednesday, officials said. Forty-one workers were rescued from the collapsed tunnel in Uttarkashi after a gruelling 17-day operation that culminated on Tuesday evening. Individually these vehicles are being marched off and sent to the district hospital which is 30 km away and is just incidentally next to the airfield where a Chinook helicopter is also parked that will be available in the morning if the doctors decide that all 41 can be held together in that hospital...Tomorrow probably in two flights, the Chinook helicopter will be able to transport all of them to Rishikesh AIIMS and they will probably be kept for about 48 to 72 hours under observation to make sure that there's nothing secondary which emerges after they have come out from this confinement for the last 17 days..."

Before that, it was the rat miners and the army engineers who were there working on this manual digging which was taking place. At every phase of this operation, there have been different agencies going in and doing specialized work. When the 41st person Is out, I am told that now at 60 to 80 meters away from the site of the collapse, within the opening of the tunnel, there is an 8-bed hospital which has been created there, and all of them are coming. Rat-hole mining may be illegal but the talent and experience of rat-hole miners were used in the rescue operation to save the 41 workers trapped in the Silkyara tunnel, a National Disaster Management Authority member said on Tuesday. National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) member Lt Gen (retd) Syed Ata Hasnain said that rat-hole miners did a phenomenal job by digging 10 metres in less than 24 hours.

Rescuers `close' to breaking through Silkyara tunnel rubble, end of workers' ordeal nears
Rescue workers on Tuesday were close to breaking through the 60-metre stretch of rubble of the collapsed Silkyara tunnel in Uttarakhand in which 41 workers are trapped for the last 16 days, officials said. At the disaster site, state government's information department chief Bansi Dhar Tiwari told reporters a little after 1.30 pm that the drilling was “over”.
