The Delhi government is considering to issue a WhatsApp number on which people can complain about hate messages being circulated on the instant messaging app in wake of the riots that claimed 42 lives in northeast Delhi, sources said on Saturday. (PTI)

BJP on Friday said it disapproved of the allegedly inflammatory statements made by Kapil Mishra and other functionaries. “Home minister Amit Shah has already made it clear that the party does not approve of such statements. His stand and that of PM Narendra Modi define the party’s line on the matter and that applies also to issues like the new citizenship law and Delhi violence,” Union law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said. “Such remarks have never been considered appropriate by the party,” he added. The Central government should immediately take action to bring back peace in New Delhi and stand by victims affected of the violence in the national capital, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee demanded after meeting with Union home minister Amit Shah in Bhubaneswar on Friday.

The house of Mudassar Khan in Mustafabad rang with joy a fortnight ago with the birth of a daughter. There are only tears in the house today. The 35-year-old was shot dead during the riots and his body discovered at Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital on Thursday. Imrana held the 15-day-old Inaya, named so by her husband Mudassar, and wept continuously on Friday. Five days after riots broke out in several parts of northeast Delhi, several families are still searching for their missing members. Most of them have already checked the hospitals, assuming they would find their near and dear ones either in the emergency block or at least in the mortuary, but to no avail.

The Hindu Sena called for a gathering to clear the Shaheen Bagh protest site on March 1, stating that Delhi Police or the deferred hearings at the courts could not clear the illegally blocked roads. Read full story

The JNU administration on Friday warned the university's students' union against providing shelter to the victims of the northeast Delhi violence on the campus. In the notice, Jawaharlal Nehru University Registrar Pramod Kumar warned of disciplinary action against students found involved in any such efforts. (PTI)

“On Monday, when the riots began and patients started pouring in with serious injuries, there was some chaos. But within a day, a system was put in place for smooth triaging – deciding the order of treatment – depending on the seriousness of the injuries and to manage the manpower needs. Some of the staffers who were on leave were asked to join immediately,” said a senior nursing staff at GTB Hospital. This hospital, with 2,500 beds, is the largest in east Delhi. Due to its proximity to the areas where maximum violence took place, most of the injured were rushed to the hospital beginning Monday.

Delhi high court on Friday sought response from the Centre and AAP government on a PIL seeking a probe by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) into the violence and its funding in northeast Delhi over the Citizenship (Amendment) Act. The plea also wanted cases to be lodged against Congress member Salman Khurshid and AIMIM members Waris Pathan and Asaduddin Owaisi for allegedly provoking citizens against CAA. Read full story

IPS officer S N Shrivastava will take over as the next Delhi Police commissioner on March 1 as the term of present chief Amulya Patnaik ends on Saturday. An order issued by the home ministry on Friday said that the 1985-batch officer Shrivastava would hold the charge of Delhi Police Commissioner till further orders. The order of his appointment is likely to be issued within a week.

The official death toll in northeast Delhi’s riots rose to 42 on Friday with four more people dying at Guru Tegh Bahadur Hospital. The Jumma prayers, meanwhile, passed off peacefully. Policemen and paramilitary forces kept a close watch, with drones deployed above, during the 10 hours of section 144 being relaxed.

The students' union of the Delhi University's School of Social Work on Friday demanded the arrest of BJP leader Kapil Mishra, saying it is 'ashamed' of him and the fact that he is an alumnus of the college. Describing Mishra as a 'blot' on the history of the DSSW, the students' body said the BJP leader has 'tarnished' the department's image with his 'provocative acts and communal statements'. A 60-year-old rag picker, who went to collect scrap early Friday morning in northeast Delhi only to be brought back home with serious head injuries, succumbed while being taken to a hospital, his son said. Ayub Shabbir lived in Nasbandi Colony in Loni, Ghaziabad, bordering Delhi, with his 18-year-old Salman Ansari, who is differently-abled, and used to earn Rs 300-400 daily dealing in scrap.
