After wk-long chase, cops track down Durgam Cheruvu accident accused in Ooty

Hyderabad: A week after businessman Gosa Shyam Raj was killed in an accident on the Durgam Cheruvu cable bridge involving a Mercedes-Benz, Madhapur police tracked down the accused driver in Ooty on Saturday, bringing to an end a frantic manhunt that spanned multiple states.Police said initial teams were dispatched to Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh and parts of Odisha. However, the breakthrough came through the call data records (CDR) of the accused's wife. "The first clue came from analysing the CDR of his wife, which helped us trace the accused to Tamil Nadu," a Madhapur police official said.The accused, a software employee from Tolichowki, has been identified as Mohammed Abdul Naveed. He will be brought back to Hyderabad on Sunday and produced before a court within 24 hours. Kukatpally deputy commissioner of police Ritiraj told TOI that the accused would be served notice and and sent for judicial remand.Shyam Raj, 32, a businessman from Hafeezpet, was struck at around 3.15 am on April 19. According to police, the accused swerved to avoid another vehicle, lost control of the car, and hit Shyam Raj, who later succumbed to his injuries the same day. "After the incident, the accused abandoned the car on the bridge, returned home, took his wife and children, and fled the city. His exact route to Ooty will be established once his statement is recorded," police said.The case has also drawn attention due to the ownership trail of the Mercedes involved. The vehicle had changed hands multiple times before being purchased by the accused, but registration records still listed a Kolkata-based company, Quantum Minerals and Metals Private Ltd., as the owner. When police initially attempted to contact the accused, they found his residence locked and his phone switched off.Investigators are also verifying the validity of his driving licence.
