VIJAYAWADA: A 26-year-old woman in Andhra Pradesh’s Kadapa district allegedly died by suicide after her fiance reportedly began pressuring her to call off their marriage following their engagement earlier this year.According to Chinna Chowk sub-inspector Prathap Reddy, the deceased, Rehana, had recently completed her MSc degree and got engaged on February 15 to Bengaluru-based techie Shahjahan, a native of Proddatur in Kadapa district. The wedding was scheduled for August this year.Initially, the couple reportedly shared a cordial relationship, with long late-night phone conversations. However, police said Shahjahan’s behaviour allegedly changed about three weeks ago.

'4 girlfriends in past'

Rehana allegedly left behind a 12-page suicide note in which she described the alleged shift in her fiance's attitude. In the note, she said Shahjahan began telling her that he had “no feelings” for her and disliked her completely. He also allegedly told her that he had been in relationships with four other women in the past. The woman, who had reportedly slipped into depression in recent days, was found dead at her residence on Patel Street in Kadapa on Wednesday.

Family allegations

Rehana’s family has alleged that Shahjahan’s behaviour changed suddenly and that he began pressuring her to end the relationship.“He told our daughter that he was addicted to alcohol and had multiple girlfriends. He also complained about being forced into the marriage by his father and pressurised Rehana to call off the marriage. When Rehana tried to confront him as to why his behaviour had suddenly changed, Shahjahan bluntly told out daughter that he completely disliked her and wasn’t getting any feelings towards her."This behaviour of Shahjahan pushed our daughter into a state of depression and she took to the extreme step of committing suicide. She has explained her ordeal in a 12 page suicide letter and we appeal to the police to punish Shahjahan who is responsible for our daughter’s death”, Rehana’s parents appealed.

Techie arrested

Police said Rehana’s body was shifted to the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Kadapa for postmortem.Based on a complaint lodged by Rehana’s father, Chinna Chowk police initially registered a case and launched an investigation.Police arrested Shahjahan and his parents, M Veeraiah and M Waheeda, on charges of abetment to suicide. The accused were produced before a local court and sent to judicial remand.
